Battle Report #284: Haley3 vs Kaelyssa

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

We were playing Entrenched and Kaelyssa got first turn. I chose the side with a hill because it actually works against Phantom Hunter. Also, the other side would funnel him towards the center, hopefully allowing me to concentrate the cloudwall as needed and wrap around his weaker flanks.

:: Game ::

Stuff runs up. I take care to place both Prime and Echoes so that Hyperion's blast can't land directly on anything touching them. Banishing Ward up on Disco, Blur on Hyperion.

A game-breaking mistake is made: My opponent gets greedy and upkeeps nothing, casting Phantom Hunter twice on Hyperion + Banshee. Due to wanting to get work out of the Banshee Hyperion moved left while Disco moved right. Temporal Distortion is a thing and the damage done was marginal.

With Hyperion outside of Disco's bubble my choice was easy. Kaelyssa feated so no charges from Lances but I could put a ton of shots into the poor colossal. I feated, blew off Blur, pumped a ton of shots into Hyperion and it went down. Cloudwall around a very tight center and Past contested the zone together with the Ironclad.

Kaelyssa misses Past and the Ironclad is killed by the combined efforts of Disco + Invictors.

Time to press home my advantage. I spent the Ironclad to buy time and now I had the opening I needed. The shooting cleared out the Invictors and started working on the jacks. Thorn moved up to contest and I scored the enemy zone + objective for 2-0.

Jacks move in to kill my things.

I kill both jacks with Grenadiers going in with Death Field support. I make a stupid mistake putting Prime within Kaelyssa's threat range but Arcane Shield, Temporal Distortion and camp is too much and I survive his last shot at winning the game.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

The game feels kind of hard but Retribution plays this way too aggressively. The turn 2 decision to go all-out aggression basically loses him the game as Hyperion is easy pickings without Disco imprint. From here on out it's just a matter of knowing Haley3 and utilizing her shooting superiority which I do quite well, systematically dismantling him and getting favourable trades.

I think the matchup is a lot harder if Kaelyssa just waits things out a little and ensure that his important things are in Disco's bubble. I'm not really sure how I'd approach this. Hopefully I'll get to play the matchup again.
